{Day 8} "I AM THANKFUL" 30 Day Thanksgiving Challenge

Day #8

I am thankful...for being a member of Alpha Omicron Pi (and the sisters I've met along the way).

*Pictures will be at the bottom of this post because they'll make more sense after you read what I've written about this day*

When I went to college for the first time back in Sept 2004 I was BEYOND excited but EXTREMELY nervous of what was to come. I'd never been away from my family for more than a couple nights at a time, never had been away from my hubby (boyfriend at the time of course haha) more than a waking moment. I knew it was going to be tough dealing with not having any friends or family around but I was excited to get out there, make new friends, and experience what it was like to live on my own.

Well, it ended up not being as wonderful as I'd hoped. I got VERY homesick for my boyfriend and my family. I had a room mate that was AWFUL. She wasn't friendly and was always gone hanging out with the AUAP (Asian students from overseas) Students and had the craziest sleep schedule. I wasn't making any friends (for those of you that know me, I'd never had a hard time being social) and after a few months had passed, all I would find myself doing was sitting in my dorm room, watching TV and eating myself to death. I ended up gaining 30lbs my first year at college.

One day, I was sitting in the cafeteria at the condiment bar getting some last little items for my burger when I heard someone call out my name! I totally thought I was imagining it, then I heard it again. I turned around that there was my best friend, Tiffany, from high school, that I'd played fast pitch with for years. I almost screamed at the sight of her, left my tray at the condiment bar and SPRINTED at Tiffany trying not to cry! It was literally an answer to my prayers!

I know what you're thinking..."she's your best friend and you didn't know what college she was going to?" haha. Tiffany is a year ahead of me in school and when she left, last time we'd talked, she had plans to go to college out of state in Oregon. And with her being a Freshman in college and me being a Senior in high school, we didn't get a chance talk as often as we both would have liked.

We sat down and started to catch up, Tiffany was telling me about how her and one of her room mates were going through the process of joining a sorority. Most of you know this as "rush" but we call it "formal recruitment" ;-) She made it sound really interesting but unfortunately it was far enough along where new people couldn't join the process so I couldn't join. Tiffany did end up becoming a member of a sorority and she had nothing but amazing things to say about it! Later on I learned that the sorority she joined had events called "continuous open recruitment" events so they could recruit girls throughout the quarter if they didn't get enough members from formal recruitment.

Tiffany encouraged me to come to one of these events just to see if I'd like the girls and see what a sorority was like without obligation to join. Well, it only took me one COR event to become hooked and I wanted to join immediately. The girls were so friendly and amazing and I just felt like I could really start some life long friendships with some of these women. I went through the whole process, became a member of Alpha Omicron Pi (AOII) - Tau Gamma Chapter on March 4th, 2005 and I've never looked back since.

I can truly say that if it wasn't for AOII and Tiffany, I would've dropped out of college to go home because I was so homesick and literally at the beginnings of having depression. I owe A LOT to the amazing women that made me feel like I had a home away from home. I formed amazing bonds with sisters and wonderful friendships that I still have to this day.

When I graduated from Eastern Washington University in March 2009, I was very sad that my days as an active sorority member were over and I would now start my journey as an alumni of AOII. What I didn't know is that I would come to love AOII on another level. Since I've graduated, I accepted the position of  my chapter's Financial Advisor and have had the position for almost a year now. It has been truly amazing to meet so many new women and to see where the chapter is now and how it has grown since I was active. It also makes me feel amazing that when these girls see me, they are truly excited to see their advisor. We all know that when it comes to dealing with finances...it's not always the "funnest" subject and tensions can definitely run high at time so knowing that these ladies are truly excited to see me after some rough times, make this position so rewarding! It's such a great feeling to give back to my sorority in a way that helps the current members.

I can't help but continue to think that maybe someday my daughter will want to join AOIIhaha!

Being a part of something so big and wonderful, never ceases to amaze me. It totally makes my day when I'm anywhere in the United States and I run into a sister from another AOII chapter. It's just incredible.

The picture above is the first "Bid Day" of the first formal recruitment I was able to experience after I joined (I put a red arrow so you can see me :-) I'm right in the middle haha). Since I joined shortly after formal recruitment in 2004, I wasn't able to attend it. That's the event that Tiffany was able to attending since she went through formal recruitment. This was also the first year we had a physical house to live in, so it was a big year for Tau Gamma! :-) I'm glad I was able to be a part of it!

This next picture, is a picture of from Bid Day when I was an active member and this year's Bid Day. Isn't the difference in members incredible?! I'm so proud! These girls did AMAZING at recruitment this year. The girls now live in a "new" house, that's bigger because they've grown SO much since I was an active member.

Are any of you a member of a sorority?! I would love to know :-)

What are you thankful for today?!

{Day 7} "I AM THANKFUL" 30 Day Thanksgiving Challenge!

Day #7

I am thankful...for coffee/Starbucks/red cups.

Before I became a Mother, Starbucks was my addiction. Coffee, IS my addiction! LOL! There are days I feel like I can't function without my normal morning cup. So, I'm EXTREMELY thankful for coffee. It tastes great, you can always make it different, oh the possibilities! :-)

It's been a long time since I've been able to indulge in Starbucks and OH MY GOSH how  much I've missed it! I tried a new drink I've never had before....Salted Carmel Mocha - I could easily blow a small fortune at that place again. Salted Carmel Mocha is officially my new favorite holiday drink.

Speaking of holidays, since I've grouped Starbucks/coffee/red cups all into one, I'm thankful for Starbucks red cups because it's another one of those symbols for "letting the holidays begin"!! I LOVE the holiday season, so red cups make me smile!

What are you thankful for today!?

Day #6

I am thankful...to be a Stay at Home Mom.

Before I became pregnant, I'd always hoped that one day, I could have children, raise them, upkeep our home, and cook/bake until the wee hours of the night. But as the time came closer and the more we talked about having children, the reality was that there was no way we could afford to have one of us stay at home with the kids and be able to pay the bills at the same time. I will admit, I was pretty devastated.

I worked in daycare systems for about 4 years prior to having our daughter and I loved it! Getting to teach those kiddos, play with them and just have fun with them was so awesome! However, when it came to the thought of us not being the ones to do all those things with our own child was a little unnerving. We wanted to be there for every giggle, every smile and never wanted to ever miss her first steps or her first words but whether we liked it or not...it was a possibility.

One of my favorite stories I love to tell...the day we had our daughter...she was MINUTES from being born, it was just days before Mother's Day...my husband grabbed my hand, looked at me and said "Hunny, I picked up another job so you can be a Stay at Home Mom liked you always dreamed. I'll do whatever it takes to make this work because what I want more than anything is for at least one of us not to miss a thing. Happy early Mother's Day!" We had a take a break in the middle of me pushing because I started crying so hard I couldn't focus. I honestly couldn't believe he did what he did, but gosh am I SO thankful that he has done SO much for me to be able to do what I do for our child and our family. Every moment I've been home has been pure heaven and our family is SO happy.

It's definitely not easy financially but seeing ALL of our daughter's firsts, being here for every giggle and every hug is PRICELESS!

I want to hear what you all are thankful for so don't hesitate to share!!! :-)

{Day 5} "I AM THANKFUL" 30 Day Thanksgiving Challenge!

Day #5

I am thankful...for Facebook.

Yep, I said it! I am extremely thankful for Facebook. A few of you may think that it's silly, or maybe even sad lol but why, you ask?

#1 - I'm a girl. It's in our nature to want to socialize. Let's face it, that's the one thing Facebook let's us do what we do best ;-) I will admit...there are times I have gotten wrapped up in the "Facebook Drama" or narrate my life on it a little more than I should, but to be honestly, it's because I seek social interaction. A lot of you that are Mother's can relate when I say that you can only talk to a toddler for so long before you want something to talk back that says more than one word at a time LOL! I'm a social girl, I love to have conversations with people, and for those of you that know me really well, I love to talk :-)

#2 - Being a Stay at Home Mom, Facebook is my "escape" at times. There are times I end up getting so busy that sometimes I feel like it's the only way to keep up with the world or communicate with my friends since time for phone calls seems rare anymore haha.

#3 - My family. Just yesterday I mentioned that we live quite a few hours away from our families and they don't get to physically be here to watch Miss K grow up so because of Facebook, they get to see her grow up. They get to see all the pictures that I post of her and sometimes there are videos too. It really is a blessing for me to be able to keep in touch with our families that way.

#4 - My business. Because Facebook is SO huge and there are MILLIONS of people that have accounts, it's the PERFECT place to advertise my business and get my business out there! :-)

I can keep naming reasons why I'm thankful for Facebook, but these 4 are definitely the top 4.

HAPPY SATURDAY EVERYONE! :-)

{Day 4} "I AM THANKFUL" 30 Day Thanksgiving Challenge!

Day #4

I am thankful...for technology.

There are definitely days where I HATE technology, when there are the occasional moments I find myself swearing at my phone when it doesn't work, or when I find myself killing half a day sitting in front of a computer browsing crafting/sewing/social networking sites when I should be doing more productive things. BUT, there are definitely the days where I can't be thankful enough for technology!

You've probably heard me talk about this before and I'm sure this won't be the last time you hear me talk about it (hahaha) but both of our families live about 5 1/2 hours away from us. It feels like completely torture being away from our loved ones some days and other days it's pretty easy to handle. If it wasn't for Skype, cell phones, internet (and more)....the distance would be UNBEARABLE!

Miss K is the only grandchild for both of our families and her grandparents are just WONDERFUL with her and I secretly hate that they can't see her every single day! Plus, it doesn't help with when all the grandparents always tell us how much they miss us and Miss K, but we love to hear that we're missed hahaha. Thankfully, that will be changing VERY soon :-) That's a whole other story that I won't get into ;-)

So, there it is....I'm extremely thankful for technology and that we're able to be in touch with our families as much as we want!
HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!! :-)

Day #3

I am thankful...for my appendages!

There are so many out there that were either born without fingers, toes, legs, arms, lost them at some point during their lifetime or have limited use to their appendages for any known reason but all I can say is that I extremely thankful that I have all of my appendages and that they are fully functioning! I definitely have a lot of respect out there for people that are missing body parts that make their lives just a little more challenging. It takes REAL skill to learn how to write with your non-dominant hand if you lost the other or learning how to walk all over again by wear a prosthetic.

So, if you have all of your appendages, or most of them, give them some much needed attention to let those body parts know you love them ;-)

What are you thankful for today?!

{Day 2} "I AM THANKFUL" 30 Day Thanksgiving Challenge!

Day #2

I am thankful...for my sewing machines (and the skills I have to use them).

Yes, I said machines, plural! LOL! Here they are...

I can say, at least, that I didn't pay for either of them. (I know, I'm a very lucky girl). The white Singer machine was my very first sewing machine bought for me as a Christmas present from my parents and the older Singer machine is one that was handed down to me from my Great Aunt's Mother who just recently passed away. I got it from her Mother a while ago when her health started to take a turn for the worst and I'm so blessed that she thought to give it to my Great Aunt and she told my Great Aunt to give it to someone that would use it and cherish it. I was beyond thrilled that I ended up with it. The dang thing is older than I am and it still works BEAUTIFULLY!! :-)

With having these two machines comes with the fact that I'm just as thankful for the skills I have to use them. I'm able to run a small business out of my home making handmade items that I absolutely adore!!! :-)
